Ramras hopes to establish new role for lieutenant governor

Published Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Fairbanks Rep. Jay Ramras hopes to turn the post of lieutenant governor into one of "rainmaker, ambassador, connector, and facilitator."

"Every job is what you make it, and I believe I can make the lieutenant governor's job a position of content and something that helps reset the trajectory of our state by a few degrees."

Ramras, a Fairbanks businessman who is in his third term in the state House, planned to file the paperwork in Anchorage by mid-morning declaring his candidacy for lieutenant governor. He planned to head back to Fairbanks later in the day.

"Families do better, students stay in school, houses of worship are full, and the pressure on law enforcement to protect the quiet enjoyment of our lives eases, when the economic tide of our community is rising. As a lieutenant governor, I hope to be a rainmaker, ambassador, connector, and facilitator to better align these interests of our young, great state,” Ramras said in a statement.

"I have been blessed, to be a born and raised Alaskan, having built businesses in Alaska that employ over 250 people. However, as our state's economy begins to show signs of strain, we need to embark on a bold but steady path, articulated in this election, by the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor."

"With great humility, and more than 20 years of private sector experience, I want to assist our next governor in reshaping policies driven by sound growth principles, that enhance our communities by utilizing our rich resource based economy. Alaska is a declining oil province and we must fix this. We have something special here and must nurture our strengths," Ramras said.

Ramras, who grew up in Fairbanks and has long been active in the community, owns Pike's Waterfront Lodge, Pike's Landing, and the Food Factory restaurant.

jaybird wants to expand on his and ayatolla coghills
investigation of the plundering of flint hills. We cannot
depend on honesty from him when it comes to the big
corporations as we already know who he carries water for.

Hmmm...the guy who Frank Turney gave a run for his money (and Jay spent about 1000 times more than Frank) in the last election is going to run for Lt. Gov.

    I love this line

"With great humility" - Jay isn't really know for his humility.

"With great ARROGANCE" would have been more accurate.

Wow! This charmer as a rainmaker, facilitator, ambassador and connector. Let me know how that works out for you.

ramras is obviously a shill for oil. Pure and simple. Not unlike most of the Juneau crowd. Please, spare me the idea that he's just a local boy. He's gone career politician, and his allegiance is to the big dollar. That's it.
Good luck, Jay. Your cronies here just keep putting you in office, regardless of who you're actually representing. They'll just keep getting what they pay for by promoting you up.
    Nothing.

sounds like good practice for office.. flamboyant words with zero accountability behind them..
How could you vote for someone who defends a study that you are being exploited by big oil so big oil can be competitive elsewhere and that is ok? What a crock.

Good idea, but he can't "push for" his own special interests
or industry groups he's involved with! We'll have to watch out for that sort of activity!

He'll never win the Anchorage/ MatSu vote and without it, no politician wins anything. When are people going to get it, Fairbanks politicians are a joke to the rest of the State. The Anchorage news shows comments on his activities almost always ended with them laughing at him.

Great, a candidate for Lieutenant Gov. who is under investigation for buying $150,000 worth of BP stock while his official actions in the legislature were intended to benefit BP. This was about the same time this middle aged creep was "dating" a teenager. Yuck.

Jaybird reminds me of Jim Whitaker. Lt. Guv? I think not, he won't even come close. Jaybird, you must have a lot of time to waste. If you were a man and not a Jaybird, you'd run against Lisa Murkowski. Tweet, tweet, tweet.

So Jay's rewriting the Constitutional duties of the LT Governor? Or will he have a coup?

Maybe with all that power he could have conscription for women. He’s tried everything else maybe drafting one might work.

Note of caution, please avoid the stamped of women heading for Canada.

It is always fun to listen to the candidates who run for Lite Governor pontificate about what they will be doing after they are elected. They are the keeper of the State Seal - oversee elections - and become the stand in for the Governor when he or she is not available for a public event. Unless a Governor wants to use the Lite-Gov for something more, that is the extent of their job for four years. Those who try and make the job any more than what I have listed find themselves sequestered in a 3rd floor broom closet for most of their tenure.

If Jay throws a fundraiser at one of his restaurants can he claim it as a tax write-off?
