ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Three men, two from Alaska and one from Arizona, have been named as finalists for chief of police in Alaska's largest city.

A committee narrowed a field of 35 applicants for Anchorage police chief down to the three on Tuesday.

Named were acting chief Steven Smith of Eagle River; Mark T. Mew of Anchorage, director of security at Anchorage Public Schools and a former city deputy police chief; and Michael G. Denney, assistant chief of police in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Anchorage Daily News reports the search committee will interview the three candidates and forward recommendations to Mayor Dan Sullivan.

Aides say Sullivan would like to make his selection by December.
